Not All CBD is Created Equal

Understanding CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of dozens of non-psychoactive cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. CBD, and all the other cannabinoids, were patented by the United States Government in 2003 as neuroprotectants and antioxidants (Patent No. 6,630,507). CBD is non-toxic and has powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties that work naturally with the human body’s endocannabinoid system to produce a wide variety of health benefits.

CBD is NOT Marijuana.  CBD (cannabidiol) is non-psychoactive and therefore, will NOT get you high.

CBD oil is derived from hemp plants that have high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and low levels of THC. At Pure Kona, our CBD oils always have less than 0.3% THC. CBD content of CBD oil can vary tremendously across different vendors due to the varying quality of hemp that’s used, as well as varying preparation and extraction techniques. Pure Kona produces some of the market’s finest quality CBD oil, extracted from healthy, CBD-rich hemp plants grown right here in the USA.

Both hemp and marijuana are from the cannabis genus. The characteristic of having low THC is the single difference that most rely on to distinguish therapeutic hemp from marijuana. CBD taken from hemp and marijuana is the exact same compound.Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-intoxicating component of the cannabis (hemp) plant. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) found in marijuana.CBD and THC are similar in that they’re both cannabinoids that interact with the cannabinoid receptors of the endocannabinoid system. However, the similarities pretty much stop there.THC is the cannabinoid that directly activates the CB1 receptor to elicit a euphoric side effect.CBD and THC both bind to the CB-2 receptor. They both interact with the CB-1 receptors, but, in different ways.CBD, on the other hand, is considered an indirect antagonist of the CB1 receptor because it blocks it from linking with other compounds. Not only is CBD non-psychoactive itself, but also it counteracts the euphoric effects of CB1 agonists like THC.The two compounds aren’t opponents, however. While THC directly activates the cannabinoid receptors and CBD indirectly interacts with them, together, along with other cannabinoids and natural constituents found in pure hemp oil, are proving to have some good health benefits.

Cannabinoids are characterized by their ability to act on the cannabinoid receptors that are found throughout the human body. Our body produces endocannabinoids and by supplementing with phytocannabinoids such as CBD we can help the body achieve peak performance.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling biological system composed of cannabinoid receptors, internal neurotransmitters (endocannabinoids) and cannabinoid receptor proteins expressed throughout the central nervous system (CB1) and peripheral nervous system (CB2). The ECS is active in regulating a range of functions involved in physiological and cognitive processes and contributes to the homeostasis of the body’s internal environment through modulation of immune, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. The ECS is linked to immunity, sleep, mood, learning and memory, appetite and digestion, metabolism, bone and muscle formation, skin and nerve function and motor control, and therefore plays a significant role in holistic health.

CBD from hemp is widely available across the USA. In 2018, updates to the U.S. Farm Bill legalized the commercial cultivation of hemp under certain regulations. Pure Kona CBD products are sourced from American-grown, high-CBD industrial hemp. We proudly offer free shipping, veterans discounts, and bulk wholesale purchasing options on all our products.

CBD naturally occurs in the hemp plant as Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA). CBDA is relatively biologically inactive due to the presence of a carboxyl group (COOH), or acid, composed of a carbon atom bonded to an oxygen atom and a hydroxyl group. Decarboxylation is a heat-catalyzed chemical reaction that decomposes CBDA into CBD, by releasing the carbon dioxide. This conversion process increases the bioavailability of CBD. Decarboxylation is an essential aspect of the CBD extractions process, wherein exposure to moderate temperatures for an extended period of time activates the therapeutic benefits of CBD for optimal uptake by receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, without degrading terpenes and other beneficial compounds.
